City to cut emissions by 30 percent in 2030

City to cut emissions by 30 percent in 2030
The Jakarta Post | Tue, 05/29/2012 8:00 AM

JAKARTA: The city administration is aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030 by installing more eco-friendly street lights across the city.

Industry and Energy Agency chief Andi Baso said that to conserve energy, the city would install a total of 3,090 LED lights along two elevated roads in Central and South Jakarta that are currently under construction.

“LED lights can save electricity by up to 50 percent compared to regular street lights. And unlike regular lights, one LED light can cut emissions by 0.89 percent,” he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com

In Jakarta, Andi said 222,342 regular street lights were still in operation, drawing 45-50 megawatts per day, while there were only 92 lights that used solar power.

However, the cost of conversion to LED or solar-powered lights requires careful consideration, and he said that his agency is drafting a proposal for the city council's consideration.

Andi said converting all street lights to LED lights would cost the city Rp 3 trillion (US$31.7 billion), and that the price of solar-powered lights was higher still. “The price of one solar-powered light is Rp 30 million,” he said.

Police to tighten up on soccer permits

Police to tighten up on soccer permits
Iman Mahditama, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Tue, 05/29/2012 8:00 AM

In the wake of a deadly brawl between soccer fans at Bung Karno Sports Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Sunday evening, the police said on Monday that they would tighten their soccer-match permit issuance process to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We’ll be more selective in issuing soccer match permits in the future, because, based on experience, there are soccer fans who just cannot control themselves,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto told reporters.

He urged all soccer fans to cease their violent behavior and to stop brawling with rivals.

Three fans died and five others were injured in the Sunday evening brawl, following a match between soccer clubs Persija of Jakarta and Persib of Bandung at Bung Karno Main Stadium.

The clubs’ fan bases, respectively known as Jakmania and Viking, are known for their bitter mutual animosity. Brawls can be expected every time Persija and Persib are engaged in a match.

The police identified one of the dead victims as Lazuardi, 29, a resident of Menteng in Central Jakarta. The other two remained unidentified as of Monday evening. The police only managed to estimate their ages as early to mid thirties.

Lazuardi was reportedly wearing a blue-colored shirt — the color often associated with Persib and Viking — at the time of his death. The police said, however, that the man was not wearing any paraphernalia identifying him as a supporter of either Persija or Persib.

According to the police, officers found Lazuardi’s body at Parkir Timur Senayan at 5:15 p.m. The two unidentified dead victims, along with an injured victim identified as Rinaldi, were found at the sports complex’s basketball hall at 8:45 p.m. All four were immediately taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.

The other four injured victims were treated at Mintohardjo Navy Hospital.

Rikwanto said that 1,524 police officers from the city police headquarters, the Central Jakarta Police, and the Tanah Abang precinct were deployed to guard the match. “However, most were located in and around Bung Karno Stadium.”

According to him, the brawl took place far from the stadium at places without continuous police patrols.

“There were patrols going around the entire sports complex. The brawl occurred when there were no officers passing by,” Rikwanto said.

He confirmed that the police would strengthen their security measures inside the sports complex at future soccer matches.
